We’re happy to add Sydney, Australia to the worldwide locations of Xojo Cloud servers. That makes nine cities that you can host your Xojo Cloud web apps in. Offering worldwide coverage for Xojo Cloud makes it easier to get your Xojo web applications close to the users that are using them, improving the speed and overall experience for your users.

Xojo Cloud is the easiest way to deploy a Xojo web app and you don’t have to do any maintenance on the server, we take care of that for you. It is secure, with a smart firewall, intrusion and hacking detection, and Security-Enhanced Linux to keep your apps secure. You can also set up SSL, MySQL and more with just a mouse-click. Xojo Cloud comes in a variety of packages offering options on RAM, storage and vCPU, so you can purchase the plan that is right for you.

We have more people deploying Xojo web apps to Xojo Cloud than ever before! If you have any questions about Xojo Cloud, please reach out to us.

But moving your projects from one server to another is easier said than done. You'll need to plan carefully to avoid downtime. Here is a simple change you can make to your DNS settings in order to limit downtime, making the move to a better server smoother.

Most Xojo Cloud users have already switched to the newer Xojo Cloud servers. These new servers have more RAM and SSDs and are the priced lower or the same as our previous servers. But moving your projects from one server to another is easier said than done. You’ll need to plan carefully to avoid downtime. Here is a simple change you can make to your DNS settings in order to limit downtime, making the move to a better server smoother.

The current A record in your DNS settings points to your existing Xojo Cloud server’s IP address and probably has a TTL (time to live) of 24 hours. At least 24 hours before you plan to move your server data and change the IP address, set the TTL to 5 minutes. Doing this means that you can change the IP address to your new server IP address and most of the DNS servers out there should pick up on the change in around 5 minutes.

After you have made the move to the new server, you should set your TTL back to 24 hours, or whatever it was set to previously. And that’s it!

Using FTP With Xojo Cloud....Or Other Servers

If you log into a Xojo Cloud server with an FTP client and have your app make changes to that server (such as creating or deleting files or folders), your FTP client will NOT see those changes, even after a refresh. This applies to Xojo Cloud or apps you have on another server.

It’s standard FTP behavior but it may not be what you expected. To see the changes you made, you have to double-click into that folder where you made the changes and THEN do a refresh. In other words, refresh only refreshes the level of the server you are looking at; simply clicking the disclosure triangle for a folder isn’t enough. You need to double-click into the folder with the changes and then refresh. Disconnecting and reconnecting will not do it because you are still looking at the cache. The only other way to do a refresh is to quit your FTP client so that the cache gets deleted.

Norton Internet Security and Xojo

UPDATE 12/2024

Though increasingly rare, we do still hear from Xojo users who get false positives from their anti-virus software when downloading Xojo or running Xojo applications. We’ve even heard of this occurring when users are debugging apps from the IDE. To get around this, you can refer to the documentation for your anti-virus software on how to exclude Xojo from scans. To fix these issues for yourself and future Xojo users, we ask that you report these occurrences to your anti-virus software makers.

If you are on Windows, you may also be interested in Avoiding False-Positive Virus Detection in Windows Apps

We’ve occasionally heard from Xojo users that their anti-virus software gives them a warning about Xojo. All of these have been false positives and we ask that you report these to your virus software makers if it happens to you.

Occasionally, Norton Internet Security will flag Xojo debug apps and can prevent you from being able to debug your Xojo apps. If you use Norton and encounter this issue there is a simple solution.

1. Open Norton

2. Go to Settings

3. Go to Antivirus and SONAR settings

4. Select “Items to exclude from scans”

5. Click add Folder, type in the full path to your work files, Click “Apply”

6. Click “Add File” and type in c:usersuser_meappdatalocaltempdebugmy applicationdebugmy application.exe – apply (change “user_me” to your username)

7. REPEAT Steps 5 and 6 for “Items to exclude from auto-protect, SONAR and download intelligence detection”

8. Norton may have removed and quarantined some of those files, so you’ll need to restore them via the “Advanced” section in Norton, or you can re-download Xojo and Norton will now leave it be.

If you get a message from your anti-virus software about Xojo feel free to contact me about it and please report false positives to the company. Your reports will help fix these issues.
