See You At The Next MBS Xojo Conference

Guest Post by Christian Schmitz of Monkeybread Software, a Xojo developer from Germany. 18 years ago various consulting projects brought Christian to plugin development for Xojo. Digging through various libraries, OS features and compiler techniques, he built a huge plugin toolbox for use in his own projects and to license to others. Christian has (co)hosted ten conferences over the years and you can join the next one in Berlin.

Do you like to meet other Xojo users and go to conferences? Well, you are in luck! In 2017 there is a conference being organized by Monkeybread Software. Xojo developers from all over the world will meet the first week in May 2017 in metropolitan Berlin, Germany. In the center of western Berlin at the Ellington hotel, next to the nearby Kurfürstendamm, the Zoo and KaDeWe. We selected this central location in Europe for easy traveling for developers from east and west.

Tip: Use Constants to Improve Code Readability

Guest Post Tip: Formatted Text/Strings in Xojo

Writing long concatenated text in Xojo (or any programming language) tends to make the code difficult to read. Typically there is a block of code that has line extenders (_), a single line that goes on forever or a block of code that appends text to an existing variable. All are hard to read. And when you add SQL statements to the mix it can become difficult to easily see what you are trying to achieve.

I’ve started using Constants for this reason.

Guest Post: Part 1, Transparent Label Tip for Windows

When developing for Windows, it’s not immediately clear how to set up a transparent label. If you change the background colour of your Window, you could end up with that ugly gray label. And of course I always forgot to set the transparency until after the debug run. But I’ve found a simple solution.

How I learned to stop worrying and love the debugger

But for those times when you write some code and you just can’t figure out why its not behaving, there is always the Debugger!

The best part is the Debugger is very easy to use and it can help you sort out a lot of common issues. Its covered in the Xojo User’s Guide, specifically see the Using the Debugger section.

There’s an old programmer’s saying: If it works, leave it alone. But sometimes we have to go back to code that works to make it go faster, because it’s too slow.

Over time I have picked up some tips on how to get better performance from Xojo code. I have used these tips to improve old code running on all platforms and have seen big improvements. They are quick and easy to do.

Web App Security- It’s For More Than Just Your App

Web apps built with the traditional tools (HTML, JavaScript, CSS, etc.) are nothing more than a series of text files and thus not very secure. Once a hacker gets into a server, they can steal your code or modify it. One big advantage web apps built with Xojo have is that Xojo compiles your app to machine code so there’s no code on your server to steal. Additionally, the overwhelming majority of hackers have no experience with machine code, so modifying your app to do something nefarious can be extraordinarily difficult.

Private/Public Key Interoperability

If you do any work with private/public key cryptography, the addition of the Crypto library last year made it finally possible to create and verify digital signatures as well as encrypt and decrypt data. Using keys with other systems requires a little more work to convert them to and from the PEM format.
